Your placement result is out. What now?

Whatever the result, one thing on the German side does not change: the calendar. Here it is, counted back from the dates ÖSYM has actually published.

ÖSYM opened preferences on 29 July at 11:45 and closes them on 10 August at 23:59; the date placement results will be announced is not on its published calendar. For anyone learning their result in August, this winter semester in Germany is out of reach: uni-assist states the winter deadline is often 15 July. The realistic target is the summer intake, often 15 January. But that is not your working date: uni-assist asks applicants to apply at least 8 weeks before the deadline, and states an evaluation usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, with current processing at 6 to 7 weeks. Counted back, that lands in mid-November.

2026-YKS candidates waiting for, or just given, their placement result.

  • This winter is out of reach

The winter deadline is often 15 July. For anyone learning their result in August, that door is closed for this year.

  • The realistic target is summer

The summer deadline is often 15 January. That leaves five months, which is not a short run.

  • Your working date is mid-November

uni-assist asks for applications at least 8 weeks before the deadline. Counted back from 15 January, that is when you have to be ready.

What did your result say?

All three outcomes lead to a different question about Germany. Find your row.

Counting back from August to 15 January

Dates taken from ÖSYM's published calendar and uni-assist's own deadlines page. A deadline is a finish line, not a target.

  1. 10 August 2026, 23:59

ÖSYM's preference window closes. The date placement results will be announced is not on the calendar, so do not plan around dates circulating elsewhere. [1][2]

  2. August - September

Collect your diploma, transcript and YKS result, and have translations prepared where required. German preparation starts here too; the level required is set per university and programme.

  3. September - October

Which university, which programme, and whether your route is a direct application or a Studienkolleg. No file sent before that question is answered is a safe file.

  4. Mid-November

The real working date. uni-assist asks for applications at least 8 weeks before the deadline; an evaluation usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, with current processing given as 6 to 7 weeks. [3]

  5. 15 January 2027

The deadline that commonly applies to the summer intake. For Studienkolleg and master's courses it can be earlier. [3]

Every university publishes its own dates. These are the common ones, not yours.

For a candidate learning their result in August, the target is the summer intake and the working date is mid-November. [3]

Winter commonly closes on 15 July and summer on 15 January; uni-assist asks for applications at least 8 weeks earlier, and the evaluation time comes on top of that.

Check your target programme's own page for its deadline, whether it admits in the summer intake, and whether a Studienkolleg is required.

Why this winter no longer works

uni-assist states that the winter deadline is often 15 July. Anyone learning their placement in August is already past it. Saying so in August is better than it being noticed in December.

What is lost is a semester, not a year. The summer intake commonly closes on 15 January, which leaves five months, and for anyone not starting German from zero that is enough time. [3]

The deadline is not your date

uni-assist asks applicants to apply at least 8 weeks before the deadline where possible, so that missing documents can still be supplied. On top of that comes the evaluation itself: usually 4 to 6 weeks, with current processing given as 6 to 7 weeks.

Counted back from 15 January, that lands in mid-November. That is the date for your calendar. A plan aimed at January is already late by the end of October. [3]

If a Studienkolleg is in your plan, the date moves earlier

uni-assist states that many universities set earlier deadlines for specific courses, and names Studienkolleg and master's programmes as the typical cases. Most applicants with a Turkish school-leaving certificate have a Studienkolleg question to answer, so the trap sits exactly here.

Do not build a calendar on "15 January" without confirming it for your own programme. A plan built on the wrong date costs a semester even when the work was done properly. [3]

You know the calendar. The route is the other half.

Making the summer intake is not about starting early, it is about starting on the right route. Direct application or Studienkolleg, which documents in which form: settle that in August rather than October and mid-November is comfortable. The route check answers it in five questions, and an advisor takes it from there.

  • Five questions, about two minutes
  • No account and no payment
  • Ends with your route, not a general rule
  • An advisor manages your application end to end

常见问题

When will the placement results be announced?

ÖSYM closes the preference window on 10 August 2026 at 23:59. The announcement date for placement results was not on ÖSYM's published exam calendar when this guide was written, so we do not state one here.

I was not placed. Can I still make this winter in Germany?

No. The winter deadline is often 15 July and that date has passed. The realistic target is the summer intake, commonly 15 January.

Does enrolling on a Turkish programme affect my German application?

A German application is a separate process on its own calendar. What to watch is where the two calendars collide; keep the mid-November date in front of you when you decide about enrolling.

By when do I actually have to apply?

uni-assist asks for applications at least 8 weeks before the deadline where possible, and states an evaluation usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, with current processing at 6 to 7 weeks. For 15 January, that means mid-November.

Does a Studienkolleg application have the same deadline?

Not necessarily. uni-assist states that many universities set earlier deadlines for specific courses and names Studienkolleg and master's programmes. Confirm it on your own programme's page.
