Studying in Germany from the USA: what your diploma qualifies you for
A US high school diploma on its own does not qualify you for direct admission to a German bachelor's. Depending on your record, the routes are qualifying AP exams, prior US college study, or a Studienkolleg followed by the Feststellungsprüfung.

A US high school diploma alone does not give direct admission to a German university. DAAD's routes are a diploma with the right AP exams (five for any field, or four for a subject area), a diploma plus about two years of US college, or a Studienkolleg and its exam if you have neither. Two conditions decide whether your AP exams count at all: uni-assist considers an AP only if you sat it while you were still in high school, and only if the result comes from the College Board rather than your school. Your unweighted GPA must be at least 3.0, and online, homeschool and GED diplomas are not accepted.
Diploma alone is not direct entry. A US high school diploma on its own leads to a Studienkolleg, not straight to a bachelor's.
AP exams open the direct route. Five AP exams at grade 3 or better give direct admission to any field; four in a cluster give subject-specific admission.
But an AP sat after graduation does not count. uni-assist considers an AP exam only if you took it while you were still in high school, and only if the College Board issued the result. A gap-year exam, or a grade reported by your school, does not qualify.
Or two years of college. A diploma plus about two years of US college can give direct admission to all fields.

Whichever AP row is yours, the result has to come from the College Board: a score your high school reports is not sufficient. Your unweighted cumulative GPA must be at least 3.0 and your diploma has to state it; online, homeschool and GED diplomas are not accepted. You still prove German separately. Check three things before you plan around the AP route: that you sat each exam while still at high school, that the College Board issued the result, and that your diploma states an unweighted GPA of at least 3.0. Then confirm the German-language proof your programme wants.
The diploma alone leads to a Studienkolleg
DAAD is clear: a US high school diploma that meets the course requirements qualifies you for a Studienkolleg, a one-year preparatory course, and its exam, the Feststellungsprüfung, not for a bachelor's directly.
Passing that exam gives a subject-restricted entrance qualification, so you can then apply for a bachelor's in your subject area. [1]
AP exams or college credits skip the Studienkolleg
Two routes go direct:
- Five AP exams at grade 3 or better in maths, a science, English, a language and one more, giving admission to any field. Four in the right cluster give subject-specific admission instead.
- About two years at a US university, with junior standing, giving direct admission to all fields.

Two conditions decide whether an AP exam counts
Counting your AP exams is not enough. uni-assist, which is where most US applications are assessed, states two conditions that decide whether an exam is looked at in the first place:
- You must have sat it while you were still in high school. In uni-assist's words, AP examinations can only be taken into consideration if the examination was taken during your time at high school. An exam sat in a gap year, or after graduating, is not considered, whatever the grade.
- The result must come from the College Board. uni-assist states that AP results must be issued by the College Board, and that results issued by the high school are not sufficient. Your school's own report of the same grade is the wrong document.
The first condition is the one that changes plans. If you have already graduated and were counting on sitting the missing AP exams to reach five, that route is closed, and about two years of US college or a Studienkolleg is what remains. [3]
Your diploma has to show the unweighted GPA
uni-assist asks for your diploma with an overview of subjects and grades from grade 9 to 12, stating your unweighted CGPA, issued by your high school with seal and signature.
This catches people out because many US high schools print a weighted GPA, lifted by AP and honors courses and sometimes on a scale above 4.0. A weighted number on the transcript does not satisfy a requirement written for an unweighted one, and the minimum you are being measured against is 3.0 unweighted.

My transcript only shows a weighted GPA. Is that a problem?
Yes. uni-assist asks for a diploma stating your unweighted CGPA, with the school's seal and signature, and the 3.0 minimum is an unweighted figure. Ask your registrar for an official document that states the unweighted GPA.
